PM Suraksha Bima Yojana 2026: ₹2 Lakh Accident Cover, ₹20 Premium, Eligibility, Enrolment and Claim

0

Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) is a one-year renewable personal accident insurance scheme for bank and post-office account holders. At an annual premium of ₹20, it provides up to ₹2 lakh for accidental death or specified permanent total disability and ₹1 lakh for specified permanent partial disability. The annual cover period normally runs from 1 June to 31 May.

PMSBY is often confused with general health insurance. It does not reimburse ordinary hospital bills or pay for death due to illness. The benefit is tied to accidental death or the specified permanent disability outcomes in the scheme. Subscribers should also keep the designated account funded for auto-debit and make sure the nominee/claim documents can be located if an accident occurs.

What Is PMSBY?

PMSBY is designed to provide basic accident protection at a very low annual premium. The policy is renewable every year and covers the insured member when death or the specified permanent disability is caused by an accident as defined under the scheme.

The official definition describes an accident as a sudden, unforeseen and involuntary event caused by external, violent and visible means. Claim admissibility still depends on the facts and documents in each case.

Who Can Enrol?

  • Individual account holder of a participating bank or post office.
  • Age 18 to 70 years.
  • Consent to join PMSBY and allow annual premium auto-debit.
  • Only one cover is permitted even if the person holds multiple accounts in one or more banks/post offices.
  • The account must remain active with sufficient balance for renewal.

Benefit Amounts

  • Accidental death: ₹2 lakh.
  • Total and irrecoverable loss of both eyes, loss of use of both hands or both feet, or specified equivalent total disability: ₹2 lakh.
  • Total and irrecoverable loss of sight of one eye or loss of use of one hand or one foot: ₹1 lakh.
  • Temporary injuries, ordinary fractures or short-term inability to work do not automatically qualify for the permanent-disability sums.

How to Enrol in PMSBY

  1. Check that your participating bank/post-office account is active.
  2. Use the bank branch, business correspondent, post office or approved digital facility offered by your account provider.
  3. Complete the PMSBY consent-cum-declaration/enrolment details.
  4. Authorise auto-debit of the annual ₹20 premium.
  5. Add or confirm nominee details.
  6. Check the account statement to make sure the premium has actually been debited and preserve the enrolment record.

Annual Renewal and When Cover Can Stop

PMSBY normally covers 1 June to 31 May and is renewed from year to year through the authorised auto-debit mandate. Delayed enrolment can be permitted on payment of the annual premium under the scheme terms.

  • Cover ends on attaining age 70 years under the scheme rule.
  • Cover can stop if the designated account is closed.
  • Insufficient balance can prevent premium debit and therefore interrupt cover.
  • If a person is mistakenly enrolled through multiple accounts, insurance cover is restricted to one account and the extra premium may be forfeited under the rules.

What PMSBY Does Not Cover

  • Natural death or death solely due to illness.
  • Routine hospitalisation expenses or medical reimbursement.
  • A temporary injury that does not result in one of the specified permanent-disability outcomes.
  • Multiple ₹2 lakh covers created by joining through several bank accounts.
  • Claims where the event does not meet the accident definition or required evidence is not produced.

How to File a PMSBY Claim

The nominee or insured member, depending on whether the claim is for death or disability, should contact the bank/post office and the tied-up insurer promptly. The claim process requires proof of the accident and its result, not just proof that the person was enrolled.

  1. Inform the participating bank/post office about the accident, death or disability.
  2. Obtain the current PMSBY claim form and insurer instructions.
  3. Provide the policy/member/account details and nominee/claimant information.
  4. Attach proof of accident, death certificate where applicable, or disability certification/medical evidence required for a disability claim.
  5. Provide claimant KYC and bank details for settlement.
  6. Submit the claim through the designated route and keep acknowledgement/copies of all documents.

Nominee and Record-Keeping Tips

  • Keep nominee details current in the bank and scheme record.
  • Preserve evidence of yearly premium debit.
  • Tell a close family member which bank/post-office account carries PMSBY.
  • If the bank account changes, do not assume the insurance automatically moves to the new account.
  • In an accident case, collect police/medical/other statutory documents required by the nature of the event.

PMSBY and PMJJBY Can Be Held Together

A person can separately enrol in PMJJBY and PMSBY if eligible because the schemes cover different risks. PMJJBY is life insurance covering death due to any cause subject to its lien and other rules, while PMSBY is accident insurance covering accidental death and specified permanent disability.

The premiums and auto-debit mandates are separate, so subscribers should make sure both debits occur if they intend to keep both covers active.

FAQs

Q. Does PMSBY cover death from a heart attack?

PMSBY is accident insurance, not general life insurance. A natural death such as death from illness is not covered merely because the person was enrolled.

Q. Will PMSBY pay for a broken arm after an accident?

Not automatically. The scheme pays for accidental death or specified permanent disability. A temporary fracture that heals does not by itself match the listed permanent-disability benefits.

Q. Can I have both PMSBY and PMJJBY?

Yes, if eligible. They are separate schemes with different risks, premiums and benefits.

Q. Can I enrol through two banks to double the PMSBY cover?

No. A person is entitled to coverage through one account only, even if multiple bank/post-office accounts are held.

Q. What happens if there is not enough money in my account at renewal?

If the annual premium cannot be auto-debited, the cover can lapse/terminate under the scheme conditions. Check the debit every year rather than assuming renewal.
