PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana 2026: ₹2 Lakh Life Cover, ₹436 Premium, Eligibility, Enrolment and Claim
Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) is a one-year renewable life-insurance scheme linked to a bank or post-office account. It provides ₹2 lakh on the insured member’s death due to any cause, subject to the scheme rules, for an annual premium of ₹436. The cover period normally runs from 1 June to 31 May and is renewed through auto-debit from the designated account.
PMJJBY is simple and low-cost, but it is still insurance. Applicants should understand the entry-age rule, the 30-day lien for non-accidental death on first enrolment, annual renewal and nominee/claim requirements. A person holding several bank accounts cannot multiply the ₹2 lakh cover by enrolling through every account; the scheme permits coverage through only one account.

What Is PMJJBY?
PMJJBY is pure life protection rather than a savings or maturity product. If the insured survives the year, no maturity amount is paid. The value of the scheme is the ₹2 lakh death cover for the nominee/legal claimant if the insured member dies while valid coverage is in force.
The scheme is renewed every year, so keeping sufficient balance in the designated bank/post-office account and maintaining correct nominee information are important.
Who Can Enrol?
- An individual account holder of a participating bank or post office.
- Age 18 to 50 years at entry.
- Consent to join the scheme and allow auto-debit of premium.
- Only one PMJJBY cover is permitted even if the person has multiple bank or post-office accounts.
- A subscriber who joined within the allowed entry age can continue annual coverage up to age 55, subject to renewal and the rules.
Premium and Late Enrolment
The full annual premium is ₹436. The official rules provide proportionate premium for first-time enrolment later in the annual cycle. The applicable amount depends on the month of enrolment:
- June, July or August: ₹436.
- September, October or November: ₹342.
- December, January or February: ₹228.
- March, April or May: ₹114.
- Renewal for the next annual cover period is handled through auto-debit subject to the subscriber’s continuing eligibility and sufficient balance.
The 30-Day Lien Period
For a first-time subscriber, risk starts from the premium auto-debit date, but death from a cause other than accident during the first 30 days is not covered. This is the PMJJBY lien period.
Accidental death is treated differently: the Government’s current scheme explanation states that accidental death is covered from day one, subject to the other claim conditions. A person should therefore not describe PMJJBY as giving unrestricted full cover from the first minute for every cause of death.
How to Enrol in PMJJBY
- Check that your participating bank or post-office account is active and has sufficient balance.
- Ask the bank/post office for PMJJBY enrolment or use its approved digital enrolment facility if available.
- Complete the consent-cum-declaration and provide the required KYC/nominee details.
- Authorise annual auto-debit of the premium from the selected account.
- Confirm that the premium has actually been debited and preserve the enrolment/certificate record.
- Review nominee and contact details whenever there is a change.
What PMJJBY Covers and Does Not Cover
- ₹2 lakh is payable on death due to any cause while valid cover is in force, subject to the scheme rules.
- It is not a hospitalisation or medical-expense policy.
- It does not pay a maturity value if the insured survives.
- Non-accidental death during the first 30 days of first enrolment is not covered.
- The scheme does not allow separate ₹2 lakh covers through multiple bank accounts for the same person.
How to Make a PMJJBY Claim
The nominee should approach the bank/post office through which the deceased member was insured. The standard claim form states that a claim should preferably be submitted within 30 days of death. Delays should not be ignored; the claimant should contact the bank and insurer immediately and follow the current claim instructions.
- Inform the participating bank/post office about the insured member’s death.
- Obtain the PMJJBY claim-cum-discharge form or current claim form used by the insurer.
- Fill the insured member and nominee/claimant details carefully.
- Attach accepted proof of death and the claimant’s KYC/bank details.
- If the nominee is a minor, provide the appointee details; if there is no surviving nomination, follow the legal-heir/claimant process.
- Submit the claim through the designated bank/post-office/insurer route and retain acknowledgement.
When Coverage Can Stop
- The subscriber reaches the termination age under the scheme.
- The bank/post-office account is closed.
- There is insufficient balance for the required premium auto-debit.
- The person is found to be insured through more than one account; cover is restricted according to scheme rules.
- Annual renewal is not completed or consent/eligibility ceases.
Practical Checks Before Every Renewal
- Keep at least the required premium amount in the designated account before renewal debit.
- Check that the account has not become dormant or frozen.
- Keep nominee name and relationship details current.
- Save evidence of the yearly premium debit.
- If premium was not deducted, contact the bank instead of assuming the insurance renewed automatically.
FAQs
Q. Does PMJJBY cover death from illness?
Yes, death due to any cause is covered while the policy is in force, but non-accidental death during the first 30 days of first enrolment is excluded under the lien rule.
Q. Can I take PMJJBY from two different banks and get ₹4 lakh cover?
No. A person with multiple accounts is eligible to join PMJJBY through only one bank or post-office account.
Q. Is a medical examination compulsory for enrolment?
The Government describes PMJJBY as a simple enrolment scheme without a routine medical examination. The subscriber must still make the required declaration and satisfy the scheme terms.
Q. What happens if the annual premium cannot be auto-debited?
Coverage can cease if the account does not have sufficient balance or the premium is not successfully collected. Verify the debit rather than assuming renewal occurred.
Q. Does PMJJBY return the premium if no claim occurs?
No. It is term life insurance, not a savings plan. There is no maturity payment simply because the insured survives the cover period.
