Lek Ladki Yojana 2026: Benefits, Eligibility, Documents and Application
Lek Ladki Yojana is Maharashtra’s girl-child support scheme for eligible yellow and orange ration-card families. It applies to qualifying girl children born on or after 1 April 2023 and provides financial assistance at important stages from birth to adulthood. The purpose is not only to encourage the birth of girls but also to support schooling, reduce dropout, improve nutrition and discourage child marriage.
The total benefit is ₹1,01,000 for an eligible girl who completes the required stages. The assistance is not paid as one lump sum at birth. It is released in five stages: after birth, at Class 1, Class 6, Class 11 and after the girl completes 18 years, subject to the documents and family-planning/eligibility conditions prescribed for the relevant instalment.

What Is Lek Ladki Yojana?
Maharashtra introduced Lek Ladki to provide staged financial support for the education and development of girls in lower-income ration-card families. The design encourages families to keep the girl in school and maintain eligibility over many years rather than receiving the full amount immediately.
Anganwadi and Women and Child Development machinery play an important role in identifying and verifying beneficiaries. Families should therefore keep the girl’s birth, ration-card, school and bank records updated from the beginning.
Benefit at Each Stage
- After the eligible girl’s birth: ₹5,000.
- When the girl is admitted to Class 1: ₹6,000.
- When the girl reaches/admitted to Class 6: ₹7,000.
- When the girl reaches/admitted to Class 11: ₹8,000.
- After completing 18 years, subject to final conditions including unmarried status: ₹75,000.
- Total across all five stages: ₹1,01,000.
Who Is Eligible?
- The family should hold an eligible yellow or orange ration card.
- The family should be resident in Maharashtra.
- Annual family income should not exceed ₹1 lakh.
- The scheme applies to one or two eligible daughters born on or after 1 April 2023 under the prescribed family conditions.
- Where there is one boy and one girl, the eligible girl can receive the benefit.
- Special rules cover twin girls in the second delivery and certain cases where the first child was born before the scheme’s effective date.
- The family-planning certificate requirement applies at the prescribed instalment stage.
Important Family-Planning Conditions
The scheme includes family-planning conditions to limit benefits to the intended family structure. For the prescribed later instalments, the mother/father must submit the required family-planning certificate. In a second delivery resulting in twin girls, both girls can be eligible under the rule, but the prescribed family-planning condition applies thereafter.
Documents Required
- Birth certificate of the beneficiary girl.
- Yellow/orange ration card.
- Income certificate showing annual family income within the ₹1 lakh limit.
- Aadhaar of the girl; the first-stage benefit has relaxation where Aadhaar is not yet available.
- Aadhaar of parent/guardian.
- Bank passbook/account details in Maharashtra.
- School bonafide/admission certificate for the Class 1, Class 6 and Class 11 instalments.
- Family-planning surgery/certificate where the relevant stage requires it.
- At age 18, voter-list/identity proof and self-declaration that the beneficiary is unmarried, as required for the final benefit.
How to Apply
- Contact the local Anganwadi worker or the Women and Child Development field functionary for the eligible girl.
- Submit the birth, ration-card, income, Aadhaar and bank details required for the first applicable stage.
- The Anganwadi worker/supervisor verifies family and beneficiary eligibility.
- The verified application is entered/certified through the departmental process and forwarded to the competent authority.
- For each later instalment, provide the new school-stage or age-related documents instead of assuming the payment will release automatically.
- Keep copies of every acknowledgement and school/family-planning certificate for future stages.
How Later Installments Are Released
Lek Ladki is a milestone-based scheme. A family that received the birth instalment must still prove that the girl has reached the relevant education stage and remains eligible. School certification becomes important for the Class-based instalments, while the final ₹75,000 payment requires the 18-year conditions to be satisfied.
Common Reasons for an Installment Being Held
- The ration card is not yellow/orange or the household record has changed.
- Income certificate exceeds the limit or is not accepted/current.
- School certificate for the relevant stage is missing.
- Required family-planning certificate has not been submitted.
- Aadhaar/bank details do not match the beneficiary record.
- For the final benefit, the girl does not satisfy the age/unmarried-status condition.
Practical Record-Keeping
- Keep the original birth certificate and copies safely for the full duration of the scheme.
- Update the bank account and mobile number when they change.
- Collect school bonafide certificates when the girl enters the relevant class.
- Do not wait until age 18 to correct the ration-card or Aadhaar spelling.
- Use the Anganwadi/WCD chain for correction instead of submitting parallel duplicate beneficiary records.
