PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2026: ₹78,000 Rooftop Solar Subsidy, Eligibility, Apply Online and Status

0

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India’s residential rooftop-solar programme. It helps eligible households install grid-connected rooftop solar and receive Central Financial Assistance (CFA) through the national portal. The standard central subsidy is ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW and up to ₹78,000 for 3 kW or higher, because the CFA is capped at the first 3 kW.

The scheme remains active in 2026 and aims to reach one crore residential households by FY 2026-27. It is often described as providing up to 300 units of free electricity a month, but that should not be read as a fixed cash or electricity entitlement for every applicant. The actual bill saving depends on rooftop-solar generation, household consumption, system size and the local DISCOM’s metering and billing arrangement.

What Is PM Surya Ghar Yojana?

The scheme was approved in 2024 with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore. Its central residential component reduces the upfront cost of rooftop solar by paying CFA after the system is installed, inspected and commissioned through the official process.

Households can use the solar power for their own consumption and, subject to State/DISCOM rules, export surplus generation to the grid. A low electricity bill or even a zero bill in some months depends on actual consumption and generation rather than on a guaranteed flat waiver.

Who Can Apply?

  • The applicant should be an Indian citizen.
  • The household should own a house with a roof suitable for rooftop solar installation.
  • There should be a valid grid-connected residential electricity connection with the local DISCOM.
  • The household should not have already availed another subsidy for the same rooftop-solar installation in a manner barred by the scheme.
  • The proposed system and vendor should meet the technical and portal requirements applicable to the consumer’s DISCOM.

How Much Subsidy Is Available?

  • 1 kW residential rooftop system: ₹30,000 central subsidy.
  • 2 kW system: ₹60,000 central subsidy.
  • 3 kW system: ₹78,000 central subsidy.
  • Systems above 3 kW: standard residential CFA remains capped at ₹78,000.
  • Some States/UTs may add their own support, but any extra State subsidy depends on the local policy and should not be assumed nationwide.

Choosing the Right Solar Capacity

The scheme portal and official guidance link suggested system size with electricity use. A household consuming roughly 0-150 units a month may consider around 1-2 kW, while 150-300 units may point to 2-3 kW. Higher consumption can justify more than 3 kW, but the central subsidy cap still applies at 3 kW.

Roof area, shadow, sanctioned load, DISCOM technical feasibility and future electricity demand should all be considered before selecting capacity.

Documents and Details to Keep Ready

  • Electricity consumer number and latest residential electricity-bill details.
  • Mobile number and email for portal registration and communication.
  • Identity and address information required by the portal/DISCOM.
  • Bank account details for CFA transfer after commissioning.
  • Cancelled cheque or other bank proof when requested for subsidy release.
  • Property/consumer or technical documents requested by the DISCOM for feasibility, net metering or inspection.

How to Apply for PM Surya Ghar Yojana

  1. Register on the official PM Surya Ghar national portal.
  2. Select the State and the correct electricity distribution company (DISCOM).
  3. Enter the electricity consumer number, mobile number and email and complete portal registration.
  4. Log in and submit the rooftop-solar application for the required capacity.
  5. Wait for feasibility approval where the DISCOM process requires it.
  6. Choose a registered vendor and get the rooftop system installed according to approved technical standards.
  7. Submit installation/plant details and apply for net metering.
  8. Complete DISCOM inspection and commissioning; the commissioning certificate/report is generated through the process.
  9. Submit bank account details and cancelled-cheque information for CFA release.
  10. Track the subsidy status on the portal until the approved amount is transferred to the bank account.

Net Meter, Inspection and Commissioning

Subsidy does not become payable merely because panels have been placed on the roof. The installation must pass the required DISCOM process, including net-meter arrangements and inspection/commissioning. The consumer should therefore avoid paying an unregistered installer who promises an “instant government subsidy” outside the portal.

The registered vendor should provide the system documents and assist with the installation record. The consumer should also retain invoices, module/inverter details, warranty papers and the commissioning certificate for future service and subsidy queries.

Loan Facility in 2026

Government information in July 2026 stated that collateral-free financing was available through nationalised banks at a concessional rate linked to the RBI repo rate plus 50 basis points; the cited rate at that time was 5.75% per annum with a 10-year tenure for the relevant rooftop-solar loan product. Because the rate is linked to the repo rate and bank terms, applicants should check the live rate before borrowing.

A loan does not replace the subsidy process. The rooftop system must still be applied for, installed and commissioned under the scheme to receive eligible CFA.

Common Reasons Subsidy Gets Delayed

  • Bank details or beneficiary name do not match the portal record.
  • Installation details are incomplete or the plant has not been commissioned.
  • Net-meter inspection is pending with the DISCOM.
  • The installer/vendor is not eligible under the scheme route.
  • Consumer number, State or DISCOM was selected incorrectly.
  • The applicant submits bank details before the required commissioning report is generated.

FAQs

Q. Can a tenant apply for the household rooftop subsidy?

The published eligibility says the applicant should own a house with a roof suitable for installing solar panels. A tenant should not assume eligibility merely because the electricity connection is in use; ownership and DISCOM requirements must be satisfied.

Q. Is ₹78,000 paid for every rooftop system?

No. ₹78,000 is the standard maximum central subsidy for a residential system of 3 kW or higher. A 1 kW system gets ₹30,000 and a 2 kW system gets ₹60,000 under the standard structure.

Q. Will the government pay my entire solar installation cost?

No. The scheme provides Central Financial Assistance, not 100% reimbursement. The household pays the remaining eligible project cost directly or through financing.

Q. Can I choose any local solar installer?

Use a vendor recognised/registered through the scheme process for your DISCOM. Installing first through an unrelated vendor and trying to claim subsidy later can create eligibility and commissioning problems.

Q. Does “300 units free” mean every beneficiary gets a fixed 300-unit waiver?

No. The phrase reflects the scheme’s rooftop-solar objective. The actual electricity bill depends on generation, self-consumption, exported power and the local metering/billing rules.
