PM Matru Vandana Yojana 2026: Eligibility, Benefits, Registration, Documents and Status Check
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a maternity benefit scheme designed to support eligible pregnant and lactating women during a period when health, nutrition and income security are closely connected. Pregnancy often brings additional medical and nutritional expenses while some women also lose wages because they need to reduce or stop work before and after childbirth. PMMVY provides a direct cash incentive so that eligible women can take better care of themselves and their child while following important health steps such as pregnancy registration, antenatal check-ups, birth registration and early immunisation.
Under PMMVY 2.0, the programme is no longer limited only to the first child. Eligible women can receive the prescribed benefit for the first living child, and a separate benefit is available for the second child when the second child is a girl. The scheme covers specified socially and economically disadvantaged categories rather than every pregnancy automatically. Registration can be completed with the help of an Anganwadi Worker or ASHA, while eligible women can also use citizen self-registration on the PMMVY portal. Aadhaar-based payment, an Aadhaar-mapped bank or post office account and accurate maternal and child health details are central to smooth processing.

What Is PMMVY?
PMMVY is implemented under the maternity benefit framework of the National Food Security Act. Its two broad objectives are to provide partial compensation for wage loss and to encourage health-seeking behaviour among pregnant and lactating women. It is not a reimbursement for a hospital bill and it is not restricted only to women in formal employment. The benefit is transferred directly to an eligible woman’s bank or post office account after the required conditions are recorded and verified.
Who Can Qualify?
PMMVY targets women from socially, economically disadvantaged and marginalised sections. A woman can qualify through notified categories such as SC or ST status, 40 percent or higher disability, BPL ration card, PM-JAY beneficiary status, e-Shram registration, PM-KISAN beneficiary status, MGNREGA job card, NFSA ration card, or net family income below Rs. 8 lakh per year. Pregnant and lactating Anganwadi Workers, Anganwadi Helpers and ASHAs are also included. Meeting one qualifying category is generally sufficient, but the applicant must also meet the pregnancy/child-related conditions.
Benefit for the First Living Child
For the first child, the total PMMVY incentive is Rs. 5,000. It is released in two instalments. The first instalment is linked with pregnancy registration and the required antenatal check-ups, while the second is linked with registration of the child’s birth and completion of the first cycle of universal immunisation at around 14 weeks. An eligible woman may separately qualify for Janani Suraksha Yojana benefits after institutional delivery, where applicable.
Benefit for the Second Child if It Is a Girl
PMMVY 2.0 introduced a benefit for the second child when the second child is a girl. The prescribed incentive is Rs. 6,000 in one instalment after childbirth and completion of the required early immunisation conditions. This provision is intended to strengthen maternal support while also encouraging a positive environment for the girl child. A second child who is a boy does not attract this additional PMMVY second-child benefit.
Health Conditions Linked to Payment
The first-child benefit requires timely pregnancy registration and antenatal care, followed later by birth registration and the child’s first immunisation cycle. For the second girl child, pregnancy registration and antenatal care are also required, followed by birth registration and early immunisation. Applicants should ensure that the Mother and Child Protection or RCH records contain correct dates because these health records support verification on the portal.
How to Apply Online: Step-by-Step Process
An eligible woman can register with the help of an Anganwadi Worker/ASHA or use citizen self-registration on the PMMVY portal. For self-registration, the following sequence is the practical route.
Step 1: Open the official PMMVY portal and select “Citizen Login”.
Step 2: Enter the mobile number and choose “Verify”. Complete the OTP verification. A first-time user must create an account before proceeding.
Step 3: Choose the relationship with the beneficiary correctly; if the woman is registering herself, select “Self”, then continue to the beneficiary-registration section.
Step 4: Choose whether the application is for the first child or the second girl child and enter the number of living children accurately.
Step 5: Enter the beneficiary’s Aadhaar and personal details, category, mobile number and the qualifying eligibility criterion. Upload the supporting eligibility document where required.
Step 6: Enter pregnancy and health details from the MCP/RCH record, including the registration number, LMP date and antenatal check-up information.
Step 7: Provide the Aadhaar-seeded, DBT-enabled bank or post-office account details and carefully review the form before final submission.
Step 8: After submission, the application moves through the concerned field functionary and approval workflow. Ensure that childbirth and immunisation details are updated at the relevant stage so the next instalment can be processed.
Documents Commonly Required
Important documents include the beneficiary’s Aadhaar card, active mobile number, Aadhaar-mapped bank or post office account details, proof of the qualifying eligibility category, MCP/RCHI card information, last menstrual period details, antenatal check-up details, childbirth record, birth certificate and immunisation details. The exact set used at one stage may differ from the next because PMMVY payment is milestone based.
Aadhaar and Bank Account Rules
The husband’s Aadhaar is no longer a mandatory condition under PMMVY 2.0. The beneficiary’s own Aadhaar, however, is important because payments are Aadhaar based. The bank or post office account should be linked and enabled for Aadhaar-based payment. A mismatch in name or inactive DBT mapping can delay payment even after the health condition is completed, so these details should be checked early.
How to Check Application or Payment Status
Do not file a second application merely because payment is pending. First check the existing beneficiary record and identify which verification or milestone is incomplete.
Step 1: Use Citizen Login on the PMMVY portal with the registered mobile number/account.
Step 2: Open the beneficiary/application details and review the current registration and approval status.
Step 3: For a pending instalment, check whether the required ANC, childbirth registration or immunisation milestone has been entered and verified.
Step 4: If the benefit is approved but not credited, confirm that the beneficiary’s bank/post-office account is active, Aadhaar-seeded and enabled for DBT.
Step 5: If the portal record needs correction or a milestone is missing, contact the Anganwadi Worker/ASHA or the concerned field functionary rather than creating a duplicate beneficiary record.
Important Coverage Note
PMMVY is a Central maternity benefit programme, but the official programme information states that Odisha and Telangana are not implementing PMMVY. Residents of these States should therefore check the maternity assistance programmes operated by their respective State Governments instead of assuming that a PMMVY application will be processed locally.
FAQs
Q. What happens after miscarriage or stillbirth?
Under PMMVY 2.0, a woman can be treated as a fresh beneficiary in a future pregnancy after a miscarriage or stillbirth, subject to the scheme rules and verification of the new pregnancy.
Q. Is the husband’s Aadhaar compulsory for registration?
No. PMMVY 2.0 removed the mandatory requirement of the husband’s Aadhaar. The beneficiary’s own Aadhaar and Aadhaar-enabled payment details remain important.
Q. Can a woman apply several months after delivery?
The PMMVY system allows registration within the prescribed post-delivery window. Official FAQs state that a beneficiary may register up to 270 days from childbirth, subject to the applicable child and eligibility conditions.
Q. What if the second delivery results in twin girls?
Twin or multiple-birth situations can require specific portal treatment because child order and living-child status matter. The beneficiary should have the case entered through the Anganwadi/ASHA system rather than making assumptions from a standard single-birth application.
Q. If the bank account is closed after registration, will the money move automatically to a new account?
Not necessarily. Aadhaar-based payment mapping must point to an active eligible account. The beneficiary should update the bank or post office linkage through the proper channel and confirm Aadhaar seeding before the next payment is processed.
