PM Ujjwala Yojana 2026: LPG Connection, Eligibility, Documents, Application, Subsidy
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) provides deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from poor households so that families can shift away from smoke-producing fuels such as firewood, dung cakes and crop residue. The connection package includes the cylinder security deposit and essential equipment, while the first refill and stove are also provided free under the scheme framework.
PMUY 2.0 has been expanded over time and eligibility has been simplified around an adult woman from a poor household who submits the prescribed deprivation declaration, with the important condition that the household must not already have an LPG connection in the name of a family member covered by the household composition. LPG affordability support has also changed over time; the latest 2026 government information states a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder on the first four refills each year for Ujjwala households. This article separates the free-connection benefit from the refill subsidy so readers do not confuse the two.

What Is PM Ujjwala Yojana?
PMUY was launched in May 2016 to expand clean cooking-fuel access among poor households, with the LPG connection issued in the name of an adult woman. Ujjwala 2.0 later expanded coverage and made it easier for migrant households and other eligible families to apply.
The scheme’s central benefit is a deposit-free connection. This means the beneficiary is not required to pay the normal security deposit for the cylinder and specified equipment covered by the scheme. It should not be confused with a promise of unlimited free LPG refills.
Who Is Eligible in 2026?
The official PMUY information describes the applicant as an adult woman from a poor household. Earlier category-based eligibility references included SC, ST, PMAY-G, Most Backward Classes, Antyodaya Anna Yojana households, tea/ex-tea garden communities, forest dwellers, island/river-island residents and SECC households. The process has since been simplified around the prescribed deprivation declaration for poor households.
The applicant must be at least 18 years old. Most importantly, the household should not already have an LPG connection registered in the name of any family member included in the family-composition document.
What Is Free Under a New PMUY Connection?
A PMUY beneficiary receives a security-deposit-free connection. The support covers the cylinder security deposit, domestic pressure regulator, safety hose, Domestic Gas Consumer Card and installation/demonstration charges. The Oil Marketing Companies also provide the first LPG refill and a two-burner stove/hotplate free of cost under the scheme.
The official FAQ states that the customer should not have to pay the distributor for these covered items, apart from any applicable state stamp fee. A CSC may charge the notified assistance fee for application submission, while self-submission online carries no such CSC service charge.
What About the LPG Cylinder Subsidy?
The refill subsidy is different from the free connection package and has been revised over time. For FY 2025-26, the government had approved ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder for up to nine refills. The latest Government of India information released in June 2026 states that Ujjwala households will receive ₹300 per cylinder on the first four refills each year, amounting to up to ₹1,200 per beneficiary annually at that rate.
Because subsidy policy can be changed through government decisions, beneficiaries should check the current rule when booking refills rather than relying on an older “9 refills” or “12 refills” article. The applicable subsidy is credited through the authorised system for eligible consumers.
Documents Required
The PMUY process uses KYC and household verification. Typical requirements include Aadhaar, proof of address where required, family-composition/ration-card information, bank account details and the prescribed deprivation declaration. Migrants can use the special self-declaration route provided by Ujjwala 2.0 where standard residence documentation is difficult.
Applicants should use the official form for their category and ensure that the household details do not hide an existing LPG connection. Duplicate household connections can lead to rejection.
How to Apply Online or Offline
Applicants can apply through the official PMUY platform and select the relevant Oil Marketing Company, or submit the KYC and supporting documents directly to a nearby authorised LPG distributor. CSCs can also assist applicants who need help with digital submission.
After submission, the OMC verifies identity, household eligibility and whether an LPG connection already exists in the household. Approval is followed by connection installation, safety demonstration and delivery of the applicable free items.
For Migrant Families
One of Ujjwala 2.0’s practical improvements is a self-declaration option for migrants who may not have conventional address documents at the place where they currently live. This makes it easier for genuinely eligible households to obtain clean cooking fuel without being blocked only because of migration.
The applicant must still satisfy the poor-household and no-existing-connection conditions. The migrant declaration is an alternative documentation route, not a relaxation of core eligibility.
How to Check Connection or Subsidy Problems
For a new connection, follow up with the selected OMC/distributor using the application reference and registered mobile number. For subsidy problems, verify Aadhaar authentication where required, bank account status and the LPG consumer record.
If the distributor demands payment for items officially covered under PMUY, the beneficiary can use the OMC grievance channel or Ujjwala helpline. The PMUY portal lists 1800-266-6696 as the Ujjwala helpline, while 1906 is the LPG emergency number.
Safety After Getting the Connection
LPG is cleaner than traditional solid fuels but must be handled correctly. Keep the cylinder upright in a ventilated place, use an approved hose and regulator, do not test leaks with a flame and close the regulator when gas will not be used for a long period. Any suspected leak should be handled as an emergency and reported through the authorised emergency channel.
KYC, Aadhaar Authentication and Consumer Record Maintenance
After receiving a connection, keep the LPG consumer record current. A change of mobile number, address, bank account or family details can affect communication and subsidy processing. Oil Marketing Companies may use Aadhaar-based authentication and other verification processes to ensure that benefits go to the genuine consumer.
If a subsidy fails, first compare the LPG consumer number, bank account and Aadhaar mapping rather than submitting a fresh connection application. A connection problem and a subsidy problem are different: the distributor can help with consumer records, while the bank may need to correct DBT mapping.
Refill Planning and Consumer Rights
The free first refill helps a new household start using LPG, but long-term clean-fuel use depends on regular refills. Beneficiaries should budget for the consumer price after applicable subsidy and use only authorised refill-booking channels. Buying cylinders from unauthorised sellers is unsafe and can also break the official consumer trail.
At delivery, the consumer can check the seal, cylinder condition and weight-related concerns through the authorised process. Safety demonstration at installation should be taken seriously, especially in a household using LPG for the first time.
FAQs
Q. Can a PMUY consumer switch to another LPG distributor after getting the connection?
Transfer rules of the Oil Marketing Company can allow movement when the household changes residence or distributor area. Use the authorised transfer process so the PMUY consumer record remains intact.
Q. Does buying an LPG stove privately cancel PMUY eligibility?
No. Eligibility is based on the household and LPG-connection conditions, not on whether the family already owns a cooking stove. However, the free stove benefit is part of the PMUY connection package and should not be claimed twice.
Q. What should be done if a cylinder is delivered with a damaged seal?
Do not accept a cylinder that appears unsafe or tampered with. Raise the issue with the authorised distributor and follow the OMC safety/grievance procedure rather than attempting to repair the seal yourself.
Q. Can a five-kg PMUY connection later be changed to a 14.2-kg cylinder?
OMCs provide procedures for cylinder-size changes subject to connection and equipment rules. Ask the authorised distributor about the applicable conversion instead of opening a duplicate household connection.
Q. Is LPG insurance a separate policy that PMUY users must purchase from an agent?
LPG consumers are covered by the industry’s applicable public-liability arrangements under prescribed conditions; do not pay an unknown agent for a supposed mandatory “Ujjwala insurance policy.” For a claim or accident, use the OMC/distributor’s official process.
