PM Kisan Yojana 2026: Annual Benefit, Eligibility, eKYC, Registration and Status Check
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) provides direct income support to eligible landholding farmer families across India. The scheme is fully funded by the Government of India and pays ₹6,000 a year in three equal instalments of ₹2,000. The money is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account after the farmer’s identity, land record and payment details pass the required checks.
PM-KISAN looks simple from the outside, but payment can stop when eKYC, land seeding or Aadhaar-bank linking remains incomplete. In 2026, these verification requirements are especially important, and the official portal advises farmers to use “Know Your Status” to see whether any requirement is pending. This article explains the benefit, exclusions, new registration, eKYC, status checking, payment problems and practical rules for farmer families.

What Is PM-KISAN?
PM-KISAN has been operational since December 2018. Its purpose is to provide predictable income support that farming households can use toward agricultural inputs as well as household needs. Unlike a crop loan, the assistance is not repayable.
The scheme pays ₹6,000 for a full eligible year. It does not pay the whole amount at once; instead, eligible beneficiaries receive three ₹2,000 instalments. Release depends on verification of the beneficiary data maintained by the State/UT and the central PM-KISAN system.
Who Can Receive PM-KISAN?
The scheme covers eligible landholding farmer families whose names and land ownership details are recorded in the relevant state or Union Territory land database, subject to the exclusion rules. “Family” is defined for the scheme as husband, wife and minor children. This definition is important because two members of the same family cannot claim separate benefits merely by using different bank accounts.
States and UTs identify and verify eligible farmer families. A successful online registration is therefore not the same as final approval; the state must validate the land and beneficiary record.
PM-KISAN Exclusion Categories
Institutional landholders are excluded. Farmer families in higher-economic-status categories are also outside the scheme. These include present or former holders of constitutional posts, specified ministers and elected representatives, many serving or retired government/public-sector employees and pensioners above the prescribed threshold, income-tax payers and registered professionals who are actively practising.
The exclusions are applied to the farmer family, not only to the person whose Aadhaar was entered. Farmers should therefore avoid duplicate claims by husband and wife or by different family members. The portal has also highlighted suspected cases where land was acquired after the relevant cut-off or multiple members of one family were receiving payments; such cases may be withheld for physical verification.
eKYC, Land Seeding and Aadhaar-Bank Linking
In 2026, eKYC is mandatory for registered PM-KISAN farmers. Land seeding and Aadhaar linking with the bank account are also essential conditions used to verify beneficiaries and release payments. If one of these requirements remains incomplete, an otherwise eligible farmer may see the instalment held back.
eKYC can be completed through the official PM-KISAN digital facilities where OTP-based verification is available, or through biometric/face-authentication options supported by authorised channels such as CSCs and the PM-KISAN mobile application. The exact route depends on whether the mobile number is linked to Aadhaar and whether the farmer can complete remote authentication.
How to Register as a New Farmer
A new applicant can use the New Farmer Registration facility on the official PM-KISAN portal. The form requires identity, Aadhaar, mobile, bank and land-related details. The submitted information then goes for state-level validation.
Farmers should enter their name exactly as it appears in Aadhaar and make sure the land record uses a compatible spelling. If the land record is still in the name of a deceased parent or another person, the mutation issue may need to be resolved first under state revenue procedures.
How to Check PM-KISAN Status
The “Know Your Status” facility shows whether the farmer is registered, eligible and ready for payment and may indicate pending verification requirements. It is more useful than relying only on an SMS because it can reveal whether eKYC, Aadhaar-bank linking or land validation is blocking payment.
Beneficiaries should also keep their registration number safe. Where a farmer has forgotten it, the portal provides recovery facilities based on identity/mobile verification.
Why an Instalment May Be Stopped
A missing instalment does not automatically mean permanent rejection. Common reasons include incomplete eKYC, Aadhaar not matching the bank record, inactive or closed bank account, land record verification pending, duplicate-family detection, death of beneficiary, change in eligibility, incorrect IFSC/account details or a state-level validation hold.
The correct response is to identify the exact failed condition and correct it. Opening repeated registrations is usually a poor solution because duplicate records can create further verification problems.
Latest Position in 2026
The PM-KISAN portal states that the 23rd instalment was released on 20 June 2026. Farmers should still check their individual status because nationwide release of an instalment does not mean every registered record is automatically credited; only eligible and successfully validated beneficiaries receive the payment.
The government has also approved continuation of PM-KISAN beyond 2026, providing policy continuity for the scheme.
Safety and Fraud Prevention
- Use only the official PM-KISAN portal, authorised CSCs and recognised government channels.
- Never share Aadhaar OTP, bank OTP or UPI PIN with someone promising faster approval.
- PM-KISAN assistance is not a loan and does not require payment of a “release fee”.
- Correct the existing record if possible instead of creating multiple registrations.
Corrections, Grievances and Physical Verification
PM-KISAN records can be placed under verification when the system detects a possible exclusion, duplicate family claim, unusual land transfer or inconsistent identity record. A farmer should not assume that a hold means permanent cancellation. The State/UT authority may require physical verification of land, family relationship or other eligibility facts before restoring payment.
Where a correction facility is available, use the existing registration number and update the specific field that is wrong. If the issue concerns land ownership, the revenue/land-record authority may need to correct the source record before PM-KISAN can validate it. A portal correction cannot replace a legally required mutation in the land database.
What Farmers Should Check Before Every Instalment Cycle
- eKYC remains completed and valid in the PM-KISAN record.
- Land seeding is shown as complete.
- Aadhaar is linked to the intended bank account and the account is active.
- The family does not have a duplicate PM-KISAN claim.
- The registered mobile number is accessible for alerts and authentication.
- Any notice for physical verification has been answered promptly.
FAQs
Q. Can agricultural land bought after the PM-KISAN cut-off automatically create a fresh entitlement?
Not automatically. The official portal specifically flags some post-1 February 2019 land-acquisition cases for verification. Eligibility depends on the applicable guidelines and how the land was acquired, so the State authority may need to examine the case.
Q. Can a farmer change the bank account used for PM-KISAN?
A bank change can be possible through the prescribed correction process, but the new account must satisfy Aadhaar/bank validation and DBT requirements. Do not close the old account until the update is properly reflected where possible.
Q. What does physical verification mean in PM-KISAN?
It means the State/UT may verify the farmer, family relationship, land ownership or other eligibility facts outside the automated portal checks. Payment can remain withheld until that verification is completed.
Q. Can an eligible farmer receive two missed instalments together after a correction?
Arrears may be released when a previously withheld record becomes valid, but it depends on the reason for the hold and whether the farmer was eligible for those instalment periods. A correction does not automatically guarantee every past payment.
Q. Is PM-KISAN money taxable as agricultural income?
Tax treatment depends on the Income-tax law applicable to the recipient and should not be confused with the scheme’s exclusion rule for income-tax payers. Farmers with a tax question should use current tax guidance rather than assume the benefit itself determines tax liability.
